How to Jump Start a Dead or Weak Car Battery
There is so much to do this weekend in Millsboro. And whether your just running errands around downtown, or headed to the Ladybug Music Festival, the last thing you want is a dead car battery. When your car refuses to start, a dead or weak battery often causes the problem. Fortunately, a jump start to get your car going takes just a few simple steps if you have the right tools on hand. So, In and Out Tire Pros offer this quick guide to safely bring your battery back to life.
Step 1: Prepare Your Tools to Jump Start Your Battery
First, make sure you have a working set of jumper cables and access to another vehicle with a fully charged battery. Then, position both cars close enough so the cables reach without stretching.
Step 2: Turn Everything Off
Before connecting anything, shut off the ignition and all electrical components in both vehicles. Otherwise, you might risk a dangerous surge or short.
Step 3: Connect the Jumper Cables
Now, attach the red cable clamp to the positive terminal (+) of the dead battery. After that, connect the other red clamp to the positive terminal of the good battery. Next, attach the black clamp to the negative terminal (–) of the good battery. Finally, clamp the remaining black end to an unpainted metal surface on the dead car’s engine block to ground it.
Step 4: Start the Working Vehicle
At this point, start the vehicle with the charged battery. Let it run for a few minutes to allow electricity to flow to the dead battery.
Step 5: Try Starting the Dead Vehicle
After a few minutes, attempt to start the vehicle with the dead battery. If it starts, let both vehicles run for another 5 to 10 minutes to recharge the battery.
Step 6: Disconnect the Cables Safely after Your Car Battery Jump Start
Now that your car is running, carefully remove the cables in reverse order. So, start by removing the black clamp from the grounded surface, then the black clamp from the good battery. Next, remove the red clamp from the good battery, and lastly, the red clamp from your vehicle.
Step 7: Let the Engine Run
To ensure your battery gains enough charge, keep your car running for at least 15 to 20 minutes before shutting it off again.
