Auto care is likely not at the top of your concerns this time of year but it should be.
Instead of thinking about auto care these days, most peoples’ focus is on the upcoming holidays – Thanksgiving activities, events, Friendsgiving, and family gatherings. When those gatherings include family members and friends who live at a distance then you might find yourself planning a road trip. And that’s when auto care should jump to the top of your list.
“Whether it’s snow, sleet or ice, winter weather can cause extremely dangerous road conditions. In 2020, there were 374 fatal crashes, and an estimated 25,000 injury crashes that occurred in wintry conditions. Preparing yourself – and your vehicle – for winter weather is key,” according to nhtsa.gov.
Among the auto care steps you should take to prepare, according to nhtsa.gov, are once overs of your cooling system, lighting, and windshield wipers.
“You may also want to visit your mechanic for a tune-up and ask them to check for leaks, badly worn hoses, or other needed parts, repairs, and replacements,” nhtsa.gov says.

One safety tip – slow down and don’t speed. If you get behind a snow plow, stay there until you can safely pass. Don’t text and drive, don’t drive distracted. Don’t drink and drive and always use your seat belt.
If you do have a roadside emergency, the NHTSA says to stay with your car, let your car be seen by keeping the interior dome light on, and be aware of possible carbon monoxide poisoning. Run your car only for short periods and stay out of enclosed spaces.
