You were headed out to McCabe Preserve the other day when you noticed the tread on your tires was worn. It’s about time for a new set and you’re really not looking forward to a tire shopping expedition.

If you’re like many drivers, you simply head into the nearest tire shop and tell them to put on the cheapest tires that will fit your car. Then, you wait a bit while the tires are changed before heading home.

But that’s not the best way to choose a set of tires, according to businessinsider.com.

Price does matter, businessinsider.com says, “and there are good budget options out there. But it’s always worth it to assess both your own needs and the design of your vehicle when researching new tires. … It’s a good idea to go the budget route if you have an older vehicle that you aren’t driving in a spirited way and don’t rely on for commuting. It’s best to pay up for high-quality, high-ticket tires if you’re commuting daily or have a vehicle that’s built for speed or to head off-road.

“And don’t forget that tire maintenance matters: you should rotate them regularly, have them aligned and balanced, and periodically examine them for tread wear.”

The main difference between a quality budget tire – one that costs less than $100 apiece – and a more expensive tire is durability. A tire that costs a bit more will last longer than the budget model. Many name brand tire manufacturers do have less expensive tires and, if you’re lucky, you may also be able to get a deal on a more expensive name brand tire

Once you decide whether to go the budget route or pay a bit more, then it’s time to talk about the type of tire – all season, winter, or tires appropriate for off-road driving.

“All-season tires are what most folks are looking for. Of course, they aren’t truly all-season, as they suffer when winter conditions show up: heavy snow, ice, slush, at lower temperatures. But for the rest of the year, they’re ideal,” businessinsider.com says. “When conditions turn snowy, however, many drivers swap a set of all-season tires for winter or snow tires.”

High-performance tires can cost upwards of $500 per tire. Off-roading tires cost as much as high-performance tires.

“For off-roading, you need sturdy tires with a deep, cleated tread designed specifically for dirt, mud, and rocks,” businessinsider.com says. “These tires make for a stiff, loud ride on paved roads and highways.”
