Don’t neglect auto care just because you haven’t been driving your car as much as usual during the past year.

The weather is turning nice after a harsh winter. You’re planning to take advantage of it by getting in 18 holes of golf. Between the harsh winter weather and the pandemic, it feels as if you’ve been locked up forever. You’re looking forward to getting in your car and getting out and about. You’re not the only one who is looking forward to getting out and about. But before you do, be sure you catch up on normal chores you might have neglected. Chores like auto care. It can be hard enough to fit in oil changes and such into a busy schedule, but when you’re not driving your car as much, the need for regular auto care seems to fade away.

Except that your car’s need for care really doesn’t fade away even when it’s not being driven as much. As one automotive journalist put it, “Not driving can cause a boatload of problems you may not have considered. They might include rodents eating your wiring, dead batteries and a need to replace your tires.”

At the very least, she says, you ought to drive your car at least once a week for a minimum of 30 minutes. And be sure to keep up on regular, preventive maintenance – get that oil changed on time, for example. Regularly check your tires and tire pressure.
