You spent the weekend exploring Delaware and playing tourist. Your goal was to get out of town and to relax a bit. And, you accomplished that. But now you are also worried about car care because the check oil light flickered on the way home from your journey.
The general “rule of thumb” was to change your oil every 3,000 miles but that’s not so clear any more.
AAA notes that now the decision to change oil hinges on many factors that include the type of oil and the car’s usage. Is it mainly used for stop-and-go traffic or for long distances? Also, the age of the car also figures into the decision. Older cars generally use mileage to help decide. Whereas, newer cars have a computer-based program to tell you when the oil needs to be changed. Some systems, AAA says, let you know when the oil is on the verge of deteriorating.
The time of year also influences the frequency of oil changes.
“Now, if you’re operating your vehicle during the winter, it is a good idea to change your oil and filters more regularly than you did during warmer months. Why? Cooler temperatures can thicken oil, making it harder to flow when you start your car. As the car warms up and heats the oil, your engine will work without the benefit of lubrication for several minutes. That can result in motor engine problems,” motorbiscut.com says.
The time of year also determines what weight oil you should choose. And that helps you decide what oil filter to use.
“The bottom line: To keep your car performing at optimal levels and avoid potentially expensive engine problems, change your oil and filters regularly when the temperature drops. Because, if you don’t, you could prematurely shorten your engine’s life,” according to motorbiscuit.com.
