Caring for your tires will help them last. It will also help keep you and your loved ones safe on the road.

You were coming out of the Cape May Zoo yesterday when you noticed that one of your tires looked a bit under-inflated. You checked and, sure enough, it needed air. You stopped and pumped some air into it, but now you’re wondering if something is wrong with that tire.  It’s not that old so it should be okay, but you’re still a bit concerned.

You’re right to be concerned about your tires because they’re an important feature of your car. As the only thing between your car and the ground, they’re not only necessary for travel, but they’re also an important safety feature.

“Think about it. Driving is one of the most dangerous things we do in our lives,” West Bend Muutal Insurance says. “We rely on four tires with a contact patch the size of our hands to keep us travelling down the road safely. So keeping our tires in good shape is important!”

That’s right. As a driver and vehicle owner, you can take steps to make sure your tires are in good shape. Doing so has several benefits – the safety of you, your family and friends is enhanced, and your tires will last longer and so save you money.

West Bend offers these tire care tips:

  • Check your tire pressure monthly.
  • Inspect your tires regularly, especially before you get on the road for long trips.
  • Rotate your tires regularly.
  • Do NOT overload your car or truck.
  • Don’t wait until your tires are literally falling apart before you replace them because, as West Bend says, “driving on your tires past their useful life puts you and your family in danger.”
  • Do not install mismatched tires.

“After doing some research, I learned that having mismatched tires can negatively impact the handling of your car and cause unusual wear and tear on the rest of your tires, as well as other components of your car,” West Bend says. “I learned that the rule of thumb for buying tires is that you should always buy at least two and put them on the rear of the car no matter what type of car you own. While I was taught you should always put new tires on the front of the car, the benefit of putting the new tires on the rear is better handling under wet conditions. If there are poor tires on the rear of your car, it could cause a spin-out.”

Here’s another tip – make sure you get your tires from a reputable dealer you can trust. You can find a reliable, trusted Millsboro tire expert at In and Out Tires.
